BS&B Safety Systems Rupture Disks (Bursting Discs)

  • REVERSE BUCKLING DISKS

The Reverse Buckling disk represents the best in rupture disk (bursting disc) technology. Invented by BS&B, our range of reverse buckling products provides a pressure relief solution for burst pressures ranging from a few inches of water column / a few millibar to over 70,000 psig / 4800 bar.

Burst pressure is accurately controlled by a combination of material properties and the shape of the disk domed structure. By loading the Reverse Buckling disk in compression it is able to resist operating pressures up to 100% of minimum burst pressure even under pressure cycling or pulsating conditions.

Designed for non fragmentation upon activation, Reverse Buckling disks are recommended for combination with pressure relief valves to isolate them from normal process conditions ensuring excellent leak tightness, reduced valve maintenance expenses and often allowing the use lower cost valve trim.

BS&B Safety Systems SIGMA™ & SIGMA EXL™

Introduction :

The Sigma EXL™ Reverse Buckling Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) has been developed to provide the highest operating pressure capability available from a Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) pressure relief device. Sigma EXL™ Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) technology and the SRB-7RS™ Safety Head combine the accuracy and reliability of Reverse Buckling Disk technology with unique disk and safety head design features that enable the Sigma EXL™ disk to operate to 95% of the Marked Burst Pressure (100% of Minimum Burst Pressure according to CEN ISO 4126-2 standards). The Sigma EXL™ Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) embraces SafT technology, Structural Apex Forming, the central feature on the disk dome enhancing burst pressure accuracy.

At its burst pressure, the Sigma EXL™ Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) dome reverses and opens by shearing around a circular score line located near the perimeter of the dome. The score line engages with one or more points on the integral hinge down stream of the disk.

The disk opens around its circular score line with the central petal supported by the hinge, avoiding fragmentation. The Sigma EXL™ Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) is offered with a simple burst pressure tolerance.

No Manufacturing Design Range needs to be considered for this high Operating Ratio disk (effectively a 'zero' range disk).

The performance of every Sigma EXL™ disk is assured by proof pressure testing each disk to its maximum recommended operating pressure. The Sigma EXL™ Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) provides the user with the highest Operating Ratio of any Rupture Disk (Bursting Disc) pressure relief device.

For users who wish to obtain the enhanced quality assurance testing of this disk design, and can accept more traditional Reverse Buckling Disk accuracy, the Sigma™ Rupture Disk is offered with a -5% Manufacturing Design Range.

ECO-SAF ( ECR )

The ECO-SAF System

The ECO-SAF System

The type ECR reverse buckling Compression Loaded Style Disk provides over pressure relief in either gas/vapor or liquid application. The ECR disk is designed with a perforated circular score in the perimeter of the dome. Gaskets which are activated by assembly of safety head, cover the perforated score line to achieve a sealed construction. The snap action of reverse buckling disk technology enables very low burst pressures to be achieved avoiding the use of weaker slotted composite disk designs .At the disks burst pressure the disk reverse, opening along this perforated score line, relieving the overpressure.

Applications
  • Overpressure protection at the lowest available reverse buckling burst pressures.
  • Prevent fugitive emission from API storage vessels. The ECR disk may be installed below the emergency fire vent. Isolating the vent and eliminating leakage of the stored fluid. The vessels normal breathing vent will continue to operate.
  • Relief valve isolation, an ECR disk may be installed at the inlet of a safety relief valve offering the following benefits:
  • Reduces fugitive emissions.
  • Less expensive valve trim may be used in corrosive applications.
  • Valve life is extended by isolating valve parts from corrosive fluid.
Features & Benefits
  • Sizes from 1" (25 mm) to 24 " (600 mm)
  • Lowest burst pressure in a reverse buckling style disk.
  • Designed to be non-fragmentation.
  • Overpressure relief for either gas /vapor or liquid applications.
  • Suitable for operation pressures up to 90% of the minimum burst pressure.
  • High performance in pressure cycling or pulsating conditions.
  • If installed damaged, disk will burst at the nominal burst pressure.
  • Vacuum resistance. (May require additional vacuum support.)
  • Low torque sensitivity
  • Disk acts as a positive seal to prevent fugitive emissions.
  • Smooth convex disk surface suitable for hygienic or polymerization applications.
  • Ideal for relief valve isolation.
  • Standard materials, Nickels, Alloys 200, Monel Alloy, Inconel Alloy 600, 316SS, Hastelloy C-276 and Tantalum.
  • Patent No: 5,368,180, 5,413,237, and 4,751,938.

The ECR disk is a low-pressure reverse buckling disk designed with perforated circular score in the perimeter of the dome. When overpressure occurs, the disk reverses and opens along the perforated score line and folds around the pivot in the outlet of the Safety head. The pivot ensures that the disks petal is retained after rupture.

FORWARD ACTING DISKS

Forward acting, or conventional rupture disks (bursting discs) have been a mainstay in process applications since BS&B developed the first rupture in 1931. Developed in 1934, the Type B disk, the "granddaddy" of all rupture disks (bursting discs) is still the disk-of-choice in many applications.

Applying load to the concave side, the disk is subjected to tension forces. Forward acting disks regulate burst pressures by the tensile strength of the material.

For low burst pressures, the Type D disk has a slotted metal top section and a metal or fluorocarbon seal. For higher operating ratios, the scored NU-SAF family of disks is often selected for polymerization processes. Our VAC-SAF line offers protection from excessive vacuum or overpressure.

For tank car applications, the ITC disk protects intermodel tank containers while the SR-TC is a surge resistant disk for railroad took cars and over-the-road trailer service industry.

A wide range of standard rupture disk (bursting disc) assemblies is available for your specific application. These Threaded and Welded Assemblies are discarded after disk rupture. Customized designs are available for customer applications that cannot be met using standard assembly designs.

BS&B Safety Systems Safety Heads

Safety Heads

Many designs and types of fittings are used as holders for rupture disks (bursting discs) and are fabricated from metal(s) compatible with the process media and atmospheric environment. Each BS&B safety head is designed for optimum safety and performance.

  • Reduced Inventory Costs. One head fits most standard international flanges eliminating the need to stock unnecessary and costly inventory.
  • Simple, Fail-Safe Installation. The asymmetric locating pins and standard welded J-Bolt ensure correct orientation by eliminating possible human error.
  • Leak-Tight Bite-Type Seal. BS&B is the only disk manufacturer who machines a Bite-Type seal into the inlet flange of the Safety Head that engages the disk material proper creating a bubble-tight seal.
  • Easy Cleaning and Inspection. Maintenance can be done without replacing the disk due to the pretorqued cap screws, which maintain the clamping load on the disk.

For conventional pre-bulged rupture disks (bursting discs) we offer Bolted Type Safety Heads. Where space is limited and where quick or frequent change-out of rupture disk may be necessary, the Union Type Safety Head is available.

With a unique curved design, the LO-TO-FLO™ Safety Head limits process buildup to ensure superior over-pressure protection for high viscosity liquids.

Whether your process requires a Sanitary / Aseptic Fitting or a QUICKSERT™ flat-faced flange assembly holder, BS&B offers the right safety head for your application.

BS&B Safety Systems Explosion Vents

BS&B Safety Systems Explosion Protection Systems

Common industrial processes have the potential for a dust explosion. Where combustible material is conveyed, filtered, heated, milled, or sprayed in a fine powdered form, the three elements of the ‘explosion triangle’ can combine: dust + air + ignition. When these occur in a confined and unprotected process volume with the dust dispersed, a deflagration can trigger resulting in an immediate overpressure and flameball.

An explosion risk assessment will typically recommend that a series of protection measures be implemented ranging from improvements in housekeeping to investment in protection equipment. Applying protection technology requires that the constraints of the process equipment, building facilities, environment and budgets are taken into account in achieving the level of personnel safety required by codes and standards.

Flexibility is provided by BS&B’s proven range of protection technology that includes explosion venting, explosion suppression, a choice of chemical & mechanical systems for the isolation of interconnected process equipment and spark detection & extinguishing equipment to manage a source of both dust explosion ignition and fire

BS&B Safety Systems Flame Arresters

Flame Arresters, Detonation Arresters, Breather Vents,
and Pressure / Vacuum Vents

Flame arresters stop the transmission of flames through piping after an ignition event associated with combustible gas inside the piping. They also stop the transmission of flames into a tank or piping from an ignition event outside of a tank or piping that is venting combustible gas into the atmosphere.

The arresters are designed to reduce the heat associated with the flame as the gas flows through it. The heat is reduced to a point where the flame is extinguished. Each arrester is configured specifically to meet application requirements. Gas classification, flow requirements, pressure-drop requirements and the number of pipe diameters between the arrester and the flame’s ignition source factor into the arrester’s proposed configuration.

BS&B markets its flame arresters under the FlameSaf brand name.

Tank Vents

Tank vents (AKA conservation vents, breather vents or pressure/vacuum relief valves) prevent tanks from exploding due to overpressure. They also prevent tanks from collapsing, or imploding, due to vacuum.

The vents relieve overpressure related to pumping fluids into the tank, atmospheric heating of the tank and heating of the tank due to fire that is external to the tank. They also relieve vacuum related to pumping fluids out of the tank and atmospheric cooling of the tank. The customer chooses the point at which the vents provide relief of either pressure or vacuum.

BS&B markets its tank vents under the TankSaf brand name.
