Hold Up Modules
• Hold-up modules for up to 50W and 300W
Gaia Converter Hold up devices provide a state-of-the-art solution to the problem of maintaining electronic system operational during input bus drop-out. Usually this approach uses very large capacitors because they are only charged at the voltage at which power fails.
The Gaia Converter HUGD series provides an alternative solution to reduce the amount of capacitance needed by charging the hold up capacitor at a high voltage value. The device is connected between the input line source bus and DC/DC modules. The HUGD series features 3 main modes of operations:
Charging operation mode: When the input voltage ramps-up and reaches the charge threshold (which is set at the «power fail voltage» value), the module charges the external capacitor while powering the dc/dc converter. When the capacitor reaches 90% of it’s final set value, the signal «capacitor charged» is activated and enters in the normal operation.
Normal operation mode: in normal operation mode when the capacitor is charged, the module is basically transparent, it only consumes low power to keep the capacitor charged, operating indefinitely in this state until the input voltage drops below the «power fail voltage» threshold.
Power fail mode: when the input voltage drops below the «power fail voltage» threshold, a «power fail» signal is activated and the module disconnects input from output and connects the hold-up capacitor to the output. When its voltage finally discharges to a value slightly above the «power fail voltage» threshold value, a «capacitor discharged» flag is activated.
All modules are manufactured in a fully automated process to guaranty high quality and fully tested with automated test equipment. Select from one of the available modules below:

Transient Protection Front-Ends
• Transient protection modules for up to 50W, 75W, 100W and 300W
Gaia Converter's transient protection modules are designed to protect electronic systems against high (or low) voltage transients that can occur on an input bus line.
This module family presents 4 possible modes of operations:
Normal operation: When input voltage is within the nominal input voltage range(s) of the following DC/DC converters. The module then operates in a steady transparency state.
Transient operation: The modules clamp input transients for compliance with international input bus standards such as :
- for Hi-Rel grade modules MIL-STD-704, EN2282, DO-160 and MIL-STD-1275
- for industrial grade modules EN50155, RIA12 and IEC571.
Low line operation (brownout / cranking): Only available on the PGDS models, Low line operation occurs when the input bus voltage drops down below the nominal input voltage range(s) of the following DC/DC converters, then the PGDS operates in «boost» mode to provide an output voltage compatible with the DC/DC converters. The PGDS series can sustain low line operation down to 6V.
Power fail operation: The module shuts down its output when input under-voltage, over temperature and/or output over-current conditions are met.

Gaia Converter's family of AC/DC power factor corrected modules are designed to be compatible with the latest airborne AC input bus voltages and and variable frequencies. The modules accept an AC input voltage with active power factor correction that enables extremely low levels of current harmonic distortion. The modules are compliant with numerous avionics/military standards requirements such as DO-160, ABD-100, Mil-Std-704.
The Gaia Converter AC-DC Front-End modules include a soft start an active inrush current limitation, a permanent short circuit protection and an inhibit function. The soft-start/active current limitation eliminates inrush current during start-up, the short circuit protection protects the module against short-circuits of any duration by a shutdown and restores to normal when the overload is removed.
