Temperature sensors
Thermopiles are used for contactless temperature measurement. The measurement principle is based on the detection of infrared radiation, using micro-machined devices in silicon based technology. The device`s inherent DC coupling characteristic allows the operation without mechanical chopper. Many applications in different markets such as medical, automotive, appliance industry and security systems demonstrate the unique relation of high precision to price.

The function principle

The function principle
Thermopiles are multiple thermocouples which use the Seebeck effect. A thermocouple is created with two, conducting materials which are connected at one point called a hot junction. If a temperature difference is induced between the hot junction and the open ends (cold junctions) a voltage is created between both ends of the thermocouple. By lining up the thermocouples a voltage of several mV can be generated.


For contactless temperature measurement, the increase of temperature of the hot junctions is created by the absorption of infrared radiation. Infrared radiation is emitted by every object and its power is increasing with increasing surface temperatures. Based on this relation, Thermopiles measure the emitted power and determine the object`s temperature precisely.

HL-Planartechnik GmbH offers thermopile components in TO-18 and TO-5 packages. They are available as one-element-detector or as eight element linear array.

The sensor input is radiation. By changing the optical elements like the window or the lens, the sensor can be individually adapted to the application. The sensing wavelength, the field of view and for the eight element linear array also the spatial segmentation can be selected by the type of window or lens with or without filter coating, respectively.

The sensor outputs are the thermopile voltage and the connections to the ambient temperature sensor nickel RTD or NTC. In case of the eight element linear array a multiplexer may be added.

On request the Thermopile components can be customized, e.g. with filters for gas detection, mirrors etc.

Nickel RTDs

Nickel RTDs

The Ni1000SOT is a nickel thin film resistance temperature detector (RTD) that is suitable for use in contact temperature sensing. The characteristics of the temperature sensor comply with the former DIN 43760 standard.

The Ni1000SOT are manufactured by PVD-deposition on a silicon substrate. The thin film structure is covered by a passivation layer for environmental protection and enhanced stability. The nickel elements are mounted on lead frames and encapsulated in SOT23 packages. This technology allows the production of miniature, low cost, high precision temperature sensors.

The Ni1000SOT sensor is qualified for the most demanding automotive applications (including exposure to hot oil) and is suitable for many more applications in harsh environments

TPT300 is a contact-less (infrared) pyrometer for industrial use. Wide temperature range (0°C – 300°C), analog/digital standard interfaces and IP65 industrial protection class makes this pyrometer a good choice for precisely controlling the temperature wherever parts are inaccessible.

Versatile Modules
The TSEM series contains contact-less temperature measurement modules which can easily be adapted to several applications. This device can either be equipped with a single spot thermopile ( TSEM01 incl. lens for small spot size) or a multi spot sensor array ( TSEM0108 incl. 8 thermopile pixels). The fully compensated and calibrated output data is provided by an I 2 C interface.

Modules for Precision Measurement
TSEV01C is a contact-less temperature measurement system (thermopile sensor) ideal for OEM usage. A measurement range of 0°C to 50°C comes along with accuracy up to ±0.5°C. The I 2 C interface provides easy access to all measurement data. Additionally, two user-configurable threshold outputs may be used for alarm or controlling applications.
