Ronan has the most sensitive systems in the industry, and as such is able to provide source sizes in the microcuries (kBq) in installations where others would provide sources in the millicuries (MBq.)  This is achieved while still delivering the same (often better) high accuracy and stability of other systems.  Ronan's confidence in our products is so high that we provide a three (3) year warranty on our electronics and a guaranteed source working life of 15 years.

Ronan is able to achieve this level of sensitivity by engineering your systems to meet your specific applications and requirements. Ronan uses the widest range of detector materials available, including Sodium Iodide (NaI), Plastic or Liquid Scintillation for low-level applications, and Ion Chamber and Geiger Mueller for applications where the gamma energy at the detector is higher.

Retrofit your old system and save Thousands! If you have an older system, it is probable that we can replace your detector with scintillation technology, upgrade your electronics to the latest available, and use your existing old source. This gives you the benefit of a new system which is easier to calibrate and maintain, with better accuracy and stability than the existing one…all while saving thousands of dollars on disposal costs of the old source, and having to buy a new one.

Point Level

The X90 Point Level Monitor detects the presence or absence of material at a given point in a tank, hopper, chute or process pipe. All components are mounted externally to the process vessel making the system ideal for monitoring the most dangerous materials such as caustic, toxic, corrosive, explosive, and carcinogenic irrespective of their temperature. The modular design is ideal to upgrade older systems while keeping the existing sources.

Mold Level

Ronan Engineering introduces the new X96 ML mold level system with an unmatched update time of 10 ms, and fast "Cast Start" capability. The user is now able to obtain high-speed sampling of the level of steel in the mold, giving better control and enabling the user to increase throughput and improve quality.

Ronan differentiates itself from competitors through its unmatched service and repair organization and innovations in technology to improve both safety and the ability to control the level of molten metal. In 1999 improvements in detector and microprocessor technology enabled Ronan to be the first in introducing the RLL Device with source activities generally 100 times less than the normal amount required. The lower levels of activity not only provide a safer working environment; they also exempt the user from having to obtain a Specific License, Wipe Tests and Surveys.

Ronan’s experienced engineering team will work with the end user and/or OEM company from the design phase of a project through the commissioning phase to ensure the seamless integration of the level measurement to the mold design and control specifications.

For mills where the user is already using gamma technology, Ronan offers a cost-effective solution to upgrade to this latest technology while utilizing existing sources, irrespective of original manufacturer. In cases where the user has a large inventory of detectors, solutions are available where those can still be used, thus increasing the cost-effectiveness of upgrading.

Radiation Monitoring Systems

 Portal Monitoring Systems

The XSD-1000 radiation detection system detects the presence of very low-levels of gamma radioactive materials hidden within a vehicle or container. In industrial applications the system is invaluable in helping catch radioactive material in scrap material before it enters a facility and causes contamination, resulting in costly cleanup expenses. Use of the system in areas of interest for homeland security provides for the early detection of gamma radiation materials, which could be used as a threat to national security.

The Ronan XSD-1000 radiation detection system is modular and expandable in design to meet your specific detection needs. A variety of detector and frame configurations are available to meet any application. The system operates on a windows environment with touch screen navigation for ease of configuration. All data is presented in an easily understood format without the need for the operator to have an understanding of physics.

Each system configuration is optimized for the particular type of transportation system being monitored. The system sensitivity is such that not only does it detect the presence of a target source, it also pinpoints the location of the isotope within the vehicle or container. In comparative testing with other systems on the market, Ronan was found to have the best sensitivity, with an ability to detect target radioactive isotopes at significantly lower levels than the other systems

PC Based Software

Ronan X96S Access Software is a package of integrated software tools designed for your PC in a Windows environment. Access software allows you to configure, calibrate, troubleshoot, tune, linearize, log data (real time), review past trends (history), save configurations and restore old configurations to the Ronan X96S microprocessor.

Special Features include:

  • Automatic Linearizer. Simply turn on the linearizer, allow the vessel to fill and the software calculates up to 32 points of correction. The software displays the points graphically. You can modify any of the points and the software then transfers the points automatically to the X96S. There is no need to stop and start the fill process while taking manual readings. The benefits are better linearizeration and less time spent on calibration.
  • Real time trends. Allows you to monitor trend level, density, weight, detector counts, detector temperature, process temperature, belt speeds, flow rates, and alarms.
  • Save & Restore Configurations. Allows you to save and restore your X96S parameters onto your PC for later use.
  • Ronan Filter tuning. Tune your applications "off line" without worrying about upsetting your process. Using data from saved trends, you can test new filter settings and see the results offline. Once you have determined the desired settings you can transfer these settings to the microprocessor.
  • Event Recordings. Access the event recording saved by the Ronan X96S microprocessor to aid in troubleshooting and monitoring modifications to the Ronan X96S microprocessor

Source Holders

RLL

Safest on the Market

RLL is a Ronan Engineering term that stands for "Radiation Low Level." RLL technology utilizes up to a total of 0.9 mCi(0.033 GBq)  of cesium source.  In comparison, some conventional density gamma gauges use source sizes with a hunderd times more activity to make the same measurement.  Because of these very low-levels of activity, and their simplicity of design, Ronan systems are the safest gamma gauges on the market.  The NRC recognized this in 1999 when Ronan Engineering attained certification for the first RLL source design.

There are three types of RLL Source Holders; the RLL-1, RLL-1A, and the RLL-2.  The RLL-1 utilizes from one to ten 0.09 mCi (0.003 GBq)  cesium capsules, while the RLL-1A utilizes a single 0.9 mCi (0.033 GBq) cesium capsule.  The RLL-2 is a strip source holder which accomodates up to a total of 100 µCi (0.004 GBq) cesium 137.

- Periodic shutter check.  Per NRC guidelines, shutters are not required on source holders with less than 1 mCi (0.037 GBq) of cesium.

- No Radiation Safety Officer and/or Special Radiation Training is Required by NRC

- No Licensed Radiation Person is Required to Install, Commission or Move On-Site

Other advantages include:

- 0.5 mrem/hr @ 12"

- Lower Disposal Cost Than Conventional, Higher Intensity Type Gages

- Lead Free Option Available

- Fire Resistant Design Available

- Less Risk to users

- Less Documentation to Maintain
The only regulatory difference between the RLL-1 and the RLL-1A is that the RLL-1 does not require a Leak Test, whereas the RLL-1A requires a leak test every three years.  This exemption from leak tests is an advantage for the RLL-1.  However, because it utilizes multiple capsules, and the RLL-1A utilizes only one capsule, the RLL-1 is more expensive than the RLL-1A.

Ronan sizes the source to last a minimum of 15 years, usually 20- 30 years.  We guarantee a minimum of 15 years on all sources.

Total Cost of Ownership

Even though the initial equipment cost may be approximately 10% higher than conventional gamma gauges, the return on investment is almost immediate.  The differential in equipment costs are offset by lower installation costs (RLL sources do NOT require licensed personal to install, commission or move them… conventional sources require licensed personal.)  On-going maintenance costs are also lower as the RLL does NOT require periodic leak tests (RLL-1) or shutter checks as conventional sources do.

- The RLL Type Gauge is Approximately 100 lbs (45 kg), Lighter Than Conventional Type Gamma Gauges and as Such are Easier to Install...No Supports Required on Smaller, Lighter Piping

- The RLL is Smaller in Overall Dimensions (6 in, 15 cm) Than Conventional Type Gamma Gauges

- Dependable, Reliable, Repeatable Measurement That is Easy to Install, Calibrate and Maintain

Ronan can utilize low-level technology because our only focus is on non-contact measurement gauges. We use extra sensitive scintillation type detectors.  We cut and polish the crystals at our facility.  We utilize spring pressure to hold the crystal securely to the photo-multiplier tube.  We do not use cements, glue or grease that can degrade or break the connection between the crystal and photo-multiplier tube.  Ronan typically uses larger crystal sizes, which enables us to measure a larger sample of the product in the pipe. Ronan’s microprocessor utilizes the latest technology in the industry
