Function
Slip rings are used wherever electric currents and signals need to be transmitted from a stationary machine element to a rotating shaft or vice versa. The transmission of electric energy between rotor and stator is realised by a sliding contact that is pressed against a rotating slip ring by a spring system exerting a constant pressure.
The optimal selection and pairing of the contact materials is an important factor for the reliability and product life. Tribological and electrical properties are considered to meet the requirements specific to the applications.

We offer slip ring systems ranging from very low currents up to high currents of several hundred amperes. The proven and maintenance-free gold/gold technology used in the Rotoflux series is ideal for the reliable transmission of delicate analogue measuring signals as well as digital signals for current bus systems.

Smaller to medium-sized slip rings are typically arranged axially in rows, whereby the insulated slip ring body can be offered as a closed stacked construction, or as a solid cast body. If short lengths or very large radial dimensions of up to 2 meters are required, the slip tracks can also be arranged concentrically, with the slip rings designed in disk shape. |

Slip rings of the ESR series are very compact and are designed for axial installation. They are used to transmit electric power and signals as well as data of the most diverse bus systems. ESW
Slip rings of the ESW series allow a free internal passage (25 – 500 mm). The gold/gold technology used in this series facilitates very compact dimensions and provides a large free internal diameter relative to the maximum outer diameter. Design and function
Our Fibre Optical Rotary Union (FORU) Rotoray® supports contactless high-speed bi-directional data transmission through a single fibre between a stationary and a rotating part. It is available for single and multi-mode glass fibres. The core technology of this product is a wave length-optimized micro-lens collimator and a high precision bearing system. Our newly developed ultra-precise alignment process and the innovative technology of positioning the optical components result in outstanding optical efficiency.
As optical systems, the Rotoray® products are completely immune against EMP and ESD.
Special applications such as explosion-proof (ATEX) installations can be realised with little effort. The robust stainless steel design ensures nearly unchanged insertion loss even under severe temperature or vibration conditions. The compact stainless steel housing is dust and water-proof and made for harsh environment applications. The fibre-optical rotary union is a passive device and is compatible with any data transmission protocol. It can be used for highest data rates up to 30 Gbit/s. The fibre connectors are usually FC/PC or FC/APC. Other connection types are available as well. Custom-made housings as well as higher IP classes are available. |

Applications
Ever increasing transmission rates require effective transmission components that are able to handle multi-gigabit data rates. Thanks to its immunity to electromagnetic interference, our fibre-optical Rotoray® products ensure high-speed data transmission even when subject to strong electric and magnetic fields or in explosive environments. Rotoray® products are typically used in offshore, marine, medical or power generation applications. Our Rotoray® fibre-optical unions are e.g. used in Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) that are used in research, technical maintenance, inspections, etc. Signals such as high definition colour video signals are transmitted via the fibre-optical union and are sent to the control room aboard a ship. It is also used in the winches of seismic ships where it ensures the reliable transmission of large data volumes. Other areas of application include medical systems (OCT), wind power systems, safety systems, etc. |

Versions
If additional channels are required, the single-channel fibre-optical rotary union can be combined with a multiplexer to facilitate the transmission of up to 16 independent optical signals via one single glass fibre. The Wave Division Multiplexers we use are passive optical devices with no power consumption or heat dissipation. They are available for 2, 4, 8 or 16 channels and can be easily upgraded to multiple optical channels. Thanks to the multi-channel system's compact and simple design, several optical channels can be transmitted very reliably and at low costs.

Design and function
Our capacitive ROTOCAP slip rings facilitate uni- and bi-directional high-speed data transmission between fixed and rotating parts with up to Gigabit Ethernet rates. Data transmission is based on a non-contacting capacitive transfer technology. Thanks to the innovative electronics devised for the capacitive transfer, the slip rings can be designed to very compact dimensions while maintaining a high level of robustness. The patented technology allows high-speed data transmission at extremely low bit error rates better than 10-12. In addition, ROTOCAP slip rings are highly resistant against external interference. The technology is independent of the rotational speed and maintenance-free.
The design of the capacitive slip rings is modular, thus allowing a simultaneous and bi-directional use of multiple channels. All standard DC-free protocols such as Fast Ethernet, Video or Fibre Channel can be transmitted. |

Applications
The continuously increasing transmission rates in many application areas require high-performance slip ring systems able to handle Gigabit data rates. Being highly resistant against electromagnetic interference, our ROTOCAP capacitive slip rings ensure a reliable transmission of data at high speeds even in environments with strong electric and magnetic interference. In wind turbines, our capacitive transmission link ensure a reliable transmission of data between any bus systems. They also ensure the real-time transfer of measuring and control signals provided e.g. by the various sensors currently used in rotor blades.
As the data volumes transmitted in bus systems are continuously increasing, products will be required for new applications whose demands can no longer be met by slip rings using conventional contact technology. Further areas of application of our capacitive slip rings are medical sytems, automation industry, radar and surveillance systems as well as offshore and marine technology. |

Versions
The flexible design of the non-contacting capacitive electronic components allows a wide range of potential configurations. There are no restrictions to the number of transmission channels or the installation space. ROTOCAP components can be realised in very small, but also in larger dimensions (Ø 50 - 500 mm). All other GAT slip ring systems can be combined with the capacitive non-contacting ROTOCAP transmission in one housing.
The combination with the media rotary unions available is also possible without any problem. Thanks to the modular design, customer-specific configurations can be realised very easily. |

Design and function
Rotokombi systems allow the combination of different rotary unions as well as the combination of rotary unions and slip rings. This technology makes it possible to transmit several mediums with different pressures and electrical currents and signals simultaneously between stationary and rotating machinery parts. The Rotokombi technology ensures that for every medium the optimally adapted sealing system is applied. Proven systems and tested components are used that are assembled specifically for every application according to customer requirements.
This system allows the combination of the features of the slip ring variants Rotoflux, Rotoray and Rotocap with any imaginable features of rotary unions, creating complete rotary transmission systems from one single source. |

Rotokombi rotary transmission systems are always tailored to the requirements of the customer or application. There is practically no limit to the number of electric poles, the media or the size.
