Diamond Roll-Rings® provide mission critical maintenance-free signal transfer for Diamond Antenna and Microwave Corporation’s high power rotary joints approved for use in the US Navy’s AN/SPS-48 three-dimensional air search system aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, Wasp-class amphibious assault ships and Tarawa-class amphibious assault ships.

Diamond Roll-Rings® are integrated into the microwave rotary joint and are designed to aid in extending the periodicity of radar system overhauls. Extending the refurbishment interval of a radar system of this type and size by even one year can save the Navy several millions of dollars.
 

Additional interesting information: Wasp-class ships are Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious assault ships operated by the US Navy. It is based on the Tarawa class with improvements to be able to operate more advanced landing craft and advanced aircraft. Ships in the Wasp-class are capable of transporting almost the entire full strength of a US Marine Corps Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and landing them via landing craft or helicopters in hostile territory. Ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers make up the Nimitz-class supercarriers for the US Navy. They are the largest capital ships in the world with full-load displacements of over 100,000 long tons and with an overall length of 1,092 ft (333m). The carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots and a maximum power output of approximately 190 MW. These ships are capable of operating for over twenty years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years.
